Tips On Surviving A Power Outage In Your Neighborhood

By Jennifer Allen

Sometimes, you cannot avoid the inevitability of a power outage within your area and it is important to remember that you must not go into panic mode when this happens. So rather than spending your time wallowing in misery, you should instead focus your energies on preparing for such eventualities. To discover how you can endure the temporary inconvenience of not having any electricity at home, here are some useful hints of advice to guide you along the way.

You must understand that there are reasons for outages happening in the first place. It might be because of faulty mechanisms that need repair or perhaps it was deactivated due to incoming storms that might cause severe damage. Quite often, these things are given advanced warning from the utility providers, so people will have ample time to plan ahead when surviving the grid going down.

No power means no light, and that can be really annoying especially when you still have no electricity during nighttime hours. To remedy this problem, make sure your house has substitute lighting sources such as lanterns and candles. For a more non flammable solution, you could also employ some flashlights or emergency lights which will last you all through the night.

Perishable food items stored in your fridge are in danger of being spoiled right after the power goes out of service. As such, you need to take them out and cook them straightaway before they turn inedible. And you need to ensure that there will be no leftovers because the refrigerator is out of order and any extras will not be stored properly unless there is active refrigeration.

In relation to the previous point, your kitchen pantry must be stocked with canned goods and other food items that do not require refrigeration. This will be especially helpful since majority of such products can simply be opened and reheated on your gas stove. However, you should use them only when you have consumed all of the perishables in your fridge first.

When your electric stove is unfortunately out of commission due to the cutoff, then be resourceful and use other means to help cook the food you need to eat. Think about buying a portable butane stove used for camping as this is adequate for things like boiling water and heating canned goods. This will surely be a useful investment for contingency measures such as power outages.

Outage announcements are usually dispatched through local TV and radio stations, so always pay attention when such information is being delivered. In this regard, you should always charge your smartphone ahead of time so you have it ready for use when contacting your loved ones. Refrain from using your phone unnecessarily because you must save it for emergency calls or texts.

Lastly, take this opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy activities from places that have backup power such as malls. If the outage happens during daytime, then allow yourself to hang out at a public park while reading a good book you have been meaning to read for a while. Just because there is no electricity does not mean you have no options to entertain yourself in the interim.

Try to remain calm and collected when you realize that the grid has gone down for the meantime. That being said, this guide should hopefully help you survive the inconvenient ordeal. Keep a positive attitude and be confident that this power outage will soon pass.

Aron Ralston And His Tragic Survivalist Story

By Walter Campbell

If you are familiar with the movie 127 Hours last 2010, then be aware that the subject portrayed by James Franco was actually based from the life of Aron Lee Ralston of an accident that happened in Utah in 2003. What happened was he used a pocketknife in giving amputation to his right arm just to escape the boulder that blocked him from getting out in the Blue John Canyon in five days. As painful as that sounds, he managed to survive.

When the occurrence did not happen yet, this man has been noted for being a good motivational speaker, outdoorsman, or even an engineer. He spends a lot of his free time in climbing many mountains like the ones in Colorado of about fourteen thousand feet or canyoneering. That is not detailed enough so here is what really happened during the risky survivalist story of Aron Ralston.

It was exactly April 26, 2003 which he hiked by himself only the Blue John Canyon at the eastern Wayne County, Utah. By the time he reached the slot canyon, a boulder suddenly dislodged and smashed his right hand. He got stuck and no help came for him because he did not inform anyone that he hiked.

He became sort of hopeless while staying there in five days and he slowly ate his two burritos and drank limited water while finding ways to get the arm out of the rock. On its third day, dehydration met his fate and he already got desperate in cutting his right arm. With the tourniquets he had at hand, he did experiments on how to properly cut by amputating a forearm to practice.

On day four, it crossed in his mind to finally do an amputation deep within his bones and he disregarded the fact that he had the worst tools for use. He also forced his self in saving the urine he excretes only to drink it later especially on day five when there was already nothing to eat and drink. He brought a videotape so he used that for bidding goodbyes to the whole family and also managed to carve on walls that indicated his name, date of birth, or assumed date of death.

In amputating, he used the two inch knife for that. It got super dull which was caused in the carving. Still, he was successful.

He was already single handed but he had to hike out with the extreme heat of the sun and he had no phone in his ride too. Luckily, he found a family on a trip from the Netherlands. In the process of alerting the right authorities to save him, they gave him some water and Oreos for a while.

He might have died if he bled to death but that did not happen even in losing weight. Individuals who rescued him finally arrived and brought him to a helicopter. He got saved while he got an amputated arm for six hours with no treatment.

When asked about what would have happened if he just waited for rescue, he replied that he would be found dead. Moreover, it would take thirteen men to remove the boulder. With his arm cremated, he scattered the ashes back where they belong.

What To Do When The Grid Goes Down

By Rebecca Hayes

The dependency of people when it comes to systems providing the most necessary things. Everything is automated these days from the electrical supply that you need to the water system. It is also necessary that you think about gas needs. All of these systems and needs are actually provided and given to industries and homes automatically. Because of that, everyone relies on the functionality of the entire grid.

But just because it is well established and various methods are used in order to properly protect it does not mean that it is actually protected at all from the biggest disasters. There is no warning when calamities occur. And when that happens, it could easily threaten not just everyone but everything that has been built so far. When the grid goes down, you must know better than to rely on the systems because this is the first that gets damaged.

Various factors would have to be considered for these needs. And you must remember to prepare these in case this actually happens. The right currency must be present. There will come a time that the actual cash would no longer work for your needs. If that is the case, you should try to learn more about barter and capitalizing on whatever precious metals you have.

Traveling could be done if you have a car or other type of vehicles. But you need to remember that the supply for gas would never be constant. You will require a more sustainable means for travel. Other people have decided that it might be easier for you to travel through bicycles and more mechanical means for transport.

For your survival, you will need necessities. More than fuel and other materials, you have to remember that you need to keep your body on the right condition. Water and food should always be present and are always necessary. So you must know how to get it.

Certain utensils and various types of devices could become really necessary during a certain time. You need to know which specific things must be present. Others refer to certain guides for survival. Toiletries and common utensils must be present. But more than that, you should be able to protect yourself and heal your injuries if ever there are any.

Stacking up on batteries and devices that do not need any type of electrical energy would be a good thing. During that time, you could see that the most common thing you would see and the best thing to utilize during that time would be those that are powered by solar energy. It would be easier if it can be carried around and is portable.

Keeping yourself warm would be a sure means for survival. Many people would have to sleep outside. And when winter comes, this could be the only means for you to live. You do not want to expose yourself to harmful elements. As much as possible, you should know what things could be used for this purpose.

Going to camping without too much gear and the equipment for it would surely help you practice. Readiness and awareness is a necessary thing. You never know when disaster would hit you. At least, you are prepared not just with the items you need but you could attest to the fact that you will be able to survive out there with minimal assistance.

Why Self Help Literature Is Useful

By Joyce Bell

People need to solve issues in their lives in order to move forward and get back on track. Of course, there is no easy way of doing this. However, with so much self help literature, one is able to find some guidance which can definitely be helpful. Many people enjoy reading books like these over and over when they have been inspiring and meaningful.

There are always friends and family members that one can turn to when you find that you are struggling with something with something that you can't handle on your own. However, they don't always have the experience to guide you forward. They may have compassion, but they won't know how to solve the issue that you are struggling with. There is always this issue of confidentiality that you have to keep in mind as well.

Therapists will also know about certain problems that you may be having problems with. However, this is not for everyone. You have to shop around for someone that you can connect with. This can take time and effort. You also have to learn to trust someone like this. You only get to have sessions like every so often, depending on your circumstances.

Psychologists charge a lot of money which the average person can't always afford. You may need a lot of sessions in order to get through issues that you are struggling with. It can take time to work through these problems. There is health insurance available, but many people have to pay for this themselves, and it can definitely set you back a great deal.

Self help books are not only written by professional people in the industry, but they are also written by those who have been through the same ordeal. This allows the reader to identify with the author and get a greater understanding for the problem that they are going through.

Of course, there is other form of therapy that comes in the form of going to a group and connecting with others who are suffering in the same way as you. You can also receive one on one counseling. Many people include this when they are busy reading a book and it can be helpful. However, there are those folk who just like to stick to the literature. This completely depends on the individual.

You may also find that there are workbooks to go through, and this is helpful when you want something more solid. There is more guidance available in the form of therapy, where you are able to take your own time. This is good for patients who are suffering from something like depression or those who have had trauma to deal with in their lives.

Psychotherapy also costs a lot more money. You can buy a couple of books for the cost of one session. When you are paying out of your own pocket and find that this type of therapy is not for you, it becomes very expensive. Some people, however, will have health insurance, but this is a luxury that not everyone is able to achieve, so you have to keep this in mind and weigh up your options.
